Né en 1806 au sein d’une famille nombreuse et qui compte saint Thomas More parmi ses ancêtres, William Ullathorne est entré à 18 ans dans l’Ordre bénédictin. Ordonné prêtre en 1831, il oeuvre aux missions en Australie et, ordonné évêque, est finalement nommé à la tête du diocèse de Birmingham. Les trente-huit années qu’il a passées dans cette fonction ont révélé un prélat débordant de zèle et d’activité, mais également un écrivain ascétique fort apprécié.
Le recueil que voici ramasse les extraits de ses oeuvres touchant aux deux vertus qu’il a mises spécialement en relief: l’humilité et la patience. Le Dictionnaire de spiritualité classe cet opuscule dans ce que l’on a fait de mieux pour parler de l’humilité.

Ullathorne was born in Pocklington, East Yorkshire, the eldest of ten children of William Ullathorne, a prosperous businessman with interests in groceries, draperies and spirits, and Hannah (née Longstaff), who converted to Roman Catholicism when she married.
